備中松山城

Bitchu Matsuyama Castle

備中松山城は、現存天守12城の一つで唯一の山城だ。自然の岩山を巧く取り込んだ石垣は素晴らしく目を奪われる。残存している城郭建築よりも、これらの石垣の方が存在感がある気がする。
関ヶ原の戦いの後、備中松山城は徳川幕府の支配下に置かれ、小堀正次・政一（遠州）父子が奉行として赴任した。
息子の政一は作庭家として名高い小堀遠州のことである。
彼の庭園だけでなく築城の名手でもあったようだ。

Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is one of the 12 existing castle towers and the only mountain castle. The stonewalls, which skillfully incorporate the natural rocky hillside, are stunning. I feel that these stonewalls have more presence than the remaining castle buildings.
After the Battle of Sekigahara, Bitchu Matsuyama Castle came under the control of the Tokugawa shogunate, and father and son Masatsugu Kobori and Masakazu (Enshu) were assigned as magistrates.
The son, Masaichi, was Kobori Enshu, a renowned gardener.
It seems that he was not only a master gardener but also a master castle builder.
