Five-storied Pagoda of Muroji Temple
Muroji Temple is located in the mountains of Nara near the border of Mie Prefecture. The temple is located on the northern bank of the Muro-river, a tributary of the Uda-river, and the pagodas are scattered from the foot of the mountain to the middle of the mountain.
Among the national treasures in the precincts of the temple, I am strongly attracted to the five-story pagoda, which was built around 800. This is the second oldest pagoda after Horyu-ji.
In ordinary five-story pagodas, the roof gradually decreases in size from the first to the fifth floor, but this pagoda has a low rate of roof diminishment, with the roofs of the first and fifth floors not much different in size, and the slope of each roof is gentle. This feature is beautiful and attractive.
