New Year’s Day, 2024. The peaceful beginning of the year took a turn for the worse. On New Year’s Day, 2024, an earthquake of maximum intensity 7 struck the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture. The tragedy struck just as families were returning to their hometowns to spend the New Year’s holiday together. The number of confirmed fatalities in Ishikawa Prefecture, including related deaths, exceeded 240 (as of the end of February 2024), The earthquake caused extensive damage, including collapsed buildings and fires. Noto is said to be famous for its gentleness and soil. Noto in winter, where the cold wind blows. The cold beach breeze caresses the burnt-out corrugated iron. Every time I do that, a cold, sad sound of “Key, key” echoes around me. Noto is crying. I couldn’t help but see my eyes moisten through the lens. Noto is a Japanese hometown that welcomes visitors with open arms. Despite the problems of depopulation and aging population Noto’s kindness will never disappear.
