— Ancient temple with a history of 1,400 years

Gorgeous and gorgeous mausoleum of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu that deeply impresses visitors.

Nikko Toshogu Shrine is located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It is one of the three major Toshogu shrines along with Kunouzan Toshogu and Ueno Toshogu. The main deity is Tosateru Daigongen, a deified version of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo shogunate.
After Tokugawa Ieyasu passed away in Sunpu in 1616, his remains were temporarily buried at Kunouzan in Suruga, but were reburied in Nikko by priest Tenkai in 1617.
In 1636, the shrine was extensively reconstructed for the 21th anniversary of the shrine’s death. At this time, temple carpenters from Edo, Kyoto, and all over the country were assembled, and the shrine was transformed into the solemn and splendid structure we see today.
The Toshogu Shrine was built at a huge cost, using every conceivable decorative technique available at the time. As the saying goes, “You can’t say ‘fine’ without seeing Nikko,” and everyone wanted to visit Toshogu at least once in their lifetime.
